Radically different

I wasn't sure whether to put this painting on my blog, but I guess sometimes it is good to show something completely different....and this IS completely different.  I painted it yesterday ready for an Exhibition with North Devon Arts at the Broomhill Art Hotel early next year (we can submit 2 pieces - I'm still contemplating what the second one will be).   I did a smaller version of this back in the Summer for the Square Picture Show and as it was enjoyable to do, I thought I would give it a go but bigger!   (Sorry about the shine from the camera flash)

Titled:  On the Edge

Measuring approx. 27" x 18"     -  OIL

here's a close up of the impasto effect

I wonder, do any of you paint something totally different from your usual work just for a particular Exhibition?

Wow, certainly different and very brave, but I like it! I'm still hesitating to start with acrylics...

Thanks so much Judy - I think we have to step out and be brave sometimes...this Exhibition at Broomhill gives me that opportunity. Go on, give the acrylics a try!

Ann this is terrific! I of course LOVE texture...it has a surreal effect to me...the reds and greys..as though entering a different level of life on the planet???? Makes me think. I've never done anything with oils. Makes me wonder if I might just like it.

A very interesting piece Ann. Not the sort of thing I would normally go for but strangely I really like this.

Thanks Lynn. Do give oils a go, one good thing about them is there is no framing involved!

Thanks John, this isn't the sort of thing I would go for either, but with Broomhill in mind I needed to go for something bolder.....and it worked, hopefully it will stand up amongst others at the Exhibition.

Sometimes it can be so liberating to get out there and try something else. The reds in this are very powerful.

Thanks Bella. The reds, certainly have!!

This painting is fantastic, how could you be in doubt? :-)) I love the strength in it , the colors...just wonderful. When this is said, I often have doubts myself whether to post a painting or not :-) I sometimes do something quite different from my own 'repertoire' , in fact my next post will be very different, but it too is for an exhibition with a theme, otherwise I don't think I would have chosen that subject.

Cool! I love the impasto effect! And I agree with Bella, this is a very powerful piece! Good luck in the show!

A very powerful image! Definitely eye catching!! It is always difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone and paint something that is totally different. But I think you have proven that it can sometimes be a very, very good thing!! Well done!

Thanks so much Jane, that's very encouraging. I try to look at the painting afresh every so often, and I'm happy with it:)

Thanks Robin...the impasto was fun to put on, I just held my breath and went for it! I may rename the work
'Wildfire : On the Edge' - think it may give the viewer a bit more to think about.

Thanks Bel - glad you like it. Hopefully this painting will stand up well at the exhibition:)

Ann this is excellent ~ Yes, I do try most everything ~ in fact that is I got more focused on what I wanted to do ~ Hopefully, now my art will begin to get more 'polished' ~ also think it is good to 'dabble' for a respite from what you usually do ~ good for the brain ~ So good to hear from you ~ hugs, Carol (Share the Creative Journey) and A Creative Harbor ^_^

Thanks Carol...it's good to know what others think, good or bad, but obviously it is a boost when my blogger friends, like yourself, give me an honest response - glad to have found others who like to try different mediums too:)

Fabulous! I really like this something different!
Of course you should post it, why not? It came from your brush - and the blog is about your artistic journey :)
Good luck in the exhibition xx
