so here are some pictures as it was gradually taken down

Gone!

All that is left now is for the site to be cleared of the rubble!

I hope the new hotel will be as beautiful as the old one was.

Exactly Judy...the approved plans are for an Art Deco style building, which is quite surprising considering Ilfracombe has a lot of Victorian buildings and previously the Council Planning people have avoided change, but then old and new buildings together can work and set each other off. There is a modern style being built at the moment, overlooking the harbour, so change looks to be afoot! Here's hoping they do get on and build this new Hotel and don't come up with some 'excuse' not to, I wouldn't want to think they had just taken the opportunity to pull an old building down!!

Wow!
Love the idea of an art deco replacement. You'll have to do the reverse photos - stage by stage as it goes up! Then of course insider photos on the opening night :) xx

I wasn't sure where this hotel was. It is always a shame to see beautiful buildings gone but I suppose the pace of change is unstoppable.

That's a good idea Pat, I'll be ready for it:)

Yes I know Bella, some for the good and some not so good:)

It's sad to see the Collingwood go, as those Victorian hotels were what made Ilfracombe such a tourist town in bygone days. So many of the big hotels have burnt down or been pulled down. Thanks for posting those pictures. I've walked past the Collingwood many times, and I seem to remember I went to a couple of school dances there.

I know what you mean Shammickite - the end of an era without a doubt!

All that charm gone. How sad.

I think that the ones who live in the houses behind are happy to get some more view :-) But it IS a pity, hopefully the new building will suit the surroundings.

We thought that too Jane, let there be light!

Even though I've never been there, and hadn't heard of the hotel until you mentioned it, it's still sad. An irreplaceable part of the history is gone...Thankfully there are still those that have their memories of it...

Seems to be the way things go these days Kim...sad it is.
