Fuchsia in the garden

The sun has helped to bring out some beautiful flowers in our garden, one of which is a fuchsia.  The other day I took the opportunity, whilst the sun shine is here, to get some photos of it

of course, this meant the inevitable sketches too.  I decided to try out various techniques for this exercise,

 starting with pencil....

this next one didn't have pencil at all, just a brush full of paint - when the first application of paint had dried
I then went in with a stronger mix for extra tonal value...

followed by the wild one of the bunch - an ink outline first, then the paint - when that had dried completely I went over with my Lamy Safari pen washing out the ink with clear water, just to see where it went...

a simple ink sketch for this one.....

and finally

Ink and then the watercolour added - carefully though, as I didn't want the ink to run...you'll notice in a lot of places the paint leaves a gap - this gave it the effect of light hitting the flower, I quite liked the result....

Have a great weekend everyone

Hi Ann, your photos and sketches are absolutely beautiful. I really have some difficulties to say which one I prefer, I would say the second and the last one. Have a good week end too!! Hug!

...thanks Judy - I also considered dropping salt on as another effect, perhaps I'll do that next time (:

A beautiful plant and wonderful exercise Ann! I love doing the same drawing in different techniques like you have done here. It helps me to loosen up and grow. I expect we'll be seeing more using this procedure! Well done!!

The fuchsias are gorgeous! They always struggle a little bit here during the summer because of the dry heat--and all the sketches/paintings are gorgeous!

I cannot see a fucia with out remembering being a little girl and playing in my girlfriend Marion's yard across the street from our house. Her mother grew huge fucia plants and we loved to "pop" them open with our little fingers. We were naughty children. I hope they still flowered after we did that. I have no idea. But it was fun to hear them POP open!

Your drawing and paintings are wonderful. I espeically like the "just paint" one. Even the running ink is a good look. I use water soluable ink pens so this doesn't happen, but I can see the advantage of wanting it to happen sometimes too. Also like the "light" effects with the unpainted white areas! Thanks for sharing, dear teacher!

Fuschia is such a wonderful flower to paint. Love all your versions. I think the one with the ink runs is so dramatic, it's my favorite.

Caitlyn (ladyphlogiston) said...

Beautiful sketches. I love the washed out one especially. Out of curiosity, have you considered getting a pen with ink that won't run? I got one a while back and it's awfully nice for watercolors and collage.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Carlarey (:

Thanks Caitlyn - yes I have the waterproof pens too, just didn't use one this time (:

Ann, your fuchias are beautiful, with wonderful rich colors and lantern shapes that are irresistible for painting and sketching. When we have traveled in England we've always been impressed by these flowers. I have no luck at all growing them, though the hummingbirds love them - I think my yard gets too hot, and has too many spider mites that love to munch on fuchsias.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Sherry - we are lucky having these fuchsias, they seem to do really well here by the sea, and yet you would think the salt air would harm them....amazing how they do well in some places and not others.

Carol said...

Great work! Each one beautiful in it's own way :0)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thank you so much Carol (:

What a charming set of fuchsia studies. I love the way they have (to my eye) a slightly oriental look.
