Collecting shells

I still haven't lost that childish enthusiasm for picking up shells on a beach!...Go on, admit it, I bet some of you still do that as well.....

here's a part of the collection I gathered up the other day

and predictably and inevitably I sketched them!

and no, I can't name them except to say they are Shells!    I do know that the long thin one complete with occupant can be raised from the sand.  (please note I have never done this myself  BUT apparently when you find a small hole in the wet sand near the sea and pour salt down it, this shell (and occupant) rise up out of the sand!   Now there's a useless piece of information for you.

Have a lovely day everyone

(Linking to Sunday Sketches today -
do pop over and enjoy seeing all the blogs
that join in)

Beautiful, fresh and salty, love the sea feeling! <3

Hi Ann, great sketches as always! I think they are Cockles, Slipper Limpet, Oyster and Razor. I think some people do the salt thing to collect the Razors because they are edible.

Bravo! I believe artists that can still reach to their childhood are the best artists. Blessings!

I love your sketches - and your photos are making me jealous stuck in cold wintery UK weather :)

Hi Sarah and Welcome to my blog - I know what you mean about the cold here. We were very lucky that our trip to this particular beach turned out so nice, but there was crisp cold air...brrr!

Thanks very much Carol :)

Love your sketches...looks so warm where you are! Looking out at the Atlantic Ocean from my window right now and I am freezing just gazing at it! No shell seeking for awhile I am afraid! Enjoy your day!

Thanks Molly, hope your day is a good one too :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Kat, we did have a lovely day and were so lucky with the weather :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Chris, yes, I'm very grateful to Jerry for naming the shells, I'm hopeless at things like that.

ann @ studiohyde said...

So glad to find another collector Dana :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Robin, I did have to google it! glad it actually has a name. Although, for me it's usually followed by me saying 'ooch my back'! lol

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Denise, Thanks for visiting. The photo is misleading with the blue sky and sunshine, believe me it was Cold. The photo was taken last week on the South Coast, English Channel. We are more used to the Atlantic Ocean too.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks very much Joni :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks very much Mari Jose :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Aww, thanks Lynn, glad you like it. I thought the splatters broke it up a bit :)

Nicely done. I moved from a Beach area in Southern California and loved collecting shells. So of course I brought some with me as a memory keeper. I haven't been to a beach in quite awhile. You did a great job capturing the shells and the sand with the splatters.

Alicia C said...

what swell shells, and sweet drawings! If I lived anywhere near the beach I would pick them up, too. I pick up rocks :D

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Cris, wonder if you miss the beach. Nice that you kept some shells though.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Alicia :)

Yes I do.. It was the Newport Beach area, that got very crowded and expensive as the years rolled around and to retire we needed to move. I loved it because It was an Artsy area With Laguna Beach only half hour down the coast that had a summer of Art festivals every year. The Beaches up here are much more cliff like then sunning types. But we do love where we moved so its OK. I spent years there now its a new experience here with loads of beauty around us and a beach only less then a couple hours away if we get really home sick for a beach.

WrightStuff said...

I'm always collecting shells when I'm on a beach! They make perfect sketching subjects don't they! Beautifully done.

ann @ studiohyde said...

That area sounds really good Cris, with the Art festival and all. But I know from your photos on your blog that you live in a lovely place now, so you have had the best of both worlds...lucky you.

ann @ studiohyde said...

I'm so glad to find I'm not the only person to collect shells! I always think I get funny looks from people here...or may be they just pretend not to pick them up..lol.

Mary said...

Actually i find that fact quite fascinating! :) I love shells, but don't know anything about naming what kinds they are. I know people who can name many, and describe each down to the last detail. I am not one of those. :D I just know they're beautiful and fun to collect! Wonderful sketches, by the way!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Exactly Mary, collecting the shells is part of the beach walk for me even if I can't name them. I did find some cuttlefish, but then that isn't a shell and since we don't own a budgie there seemed little point in picking that up. lol

Sonia Aguiar said...

Hola Ann :) Reconozco que aún recojo conchas y también alguna que otra pequeña piedra llamativa. Las conchas son especialmente agradables de pintar y tus bocetos son preciosos. ¡Feliz lunes!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Sonia thank you very much, it is good to know that you also collect shells and stones. I collect stones and found one with a hole through the centre of it.

I can't go on a beech without picking up shells. Love the sketch.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks so much Julie :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

I'm so glad to find out that other people pick up shells John and I am not the only one! Shells and also pebbles and stones are so addictive to collect.

Joan Tavolott said...

I'm always picking up shells too and other beach "finds." The sketch of the shells came out really well.

I must remember to bring the salt with me to the beach next time! HAHA! I love picking up shells and had a HUGE collection which I sold before leaving the States. I am now hunting them again and will use them in, on and around my house this time around. Lovely sketches!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Joan, good to know I'm not alone :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Like the salt joke annie! Lol. Somehow I thought you would be a shell collector, now I've given you a good reason to be on those gorgeous beaches lol.

Sharon Whitley said...

Yes I can't resist collecting shells on the beach either - and pebbles although we're not supposed to in this country! Love your sketches!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Glad you collect too Sharon. I know what you mean about pebbles though...I have kept one with a hole through the middle, but others I photo, sketch and return to where I found them.

Jane said...

I confess, I do it every year :-)) You did some great sketches !

ann @ studiohyde said...

Ha ha, another shell collector, so glad I'm not alone! Fun though isn't it Jane.

Linda said...

Shells are fun to pick up. Nice job on drawing them!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks so much Linda :-)

Sadami said...

Hi, Ann,
Me, too, love picking up shells and the book, "Gift from the sea" written by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. You have to come to Sydney. I'll take you to a beautiful beach and we'll chat over life, while sketching!
Best wishes, Sadami

ann @ studiohyde said...

...I can just imagine the shells on the beaches in your part of the world! I'm going to look up the Anne Morrow Lindbergh book now :)
