Isle of Wight

After our experience with the Hotel in the New Forest (see this post if you haven't already) we were pleased to continue our travels and go on to the next Hotel, this one on the Isle of Wight

and so to a Hotel we have stayed in before.

The Luccombe Manor Hotel   at  Shanklin

Where they gave us a Warm welcome (literally) they had central heating...yay!

We had a recently modernised room...clean  and no mold!...  yay!

They had Internet coverage....yay!

And they had more than 2 channels on the TV....yay..again!

Here are some photos and a mini grand tour for you...

Culver Down
(click each heading for map of where these places are on the island)

....although a cold grey day, we went up onto this hill to look back across Sandown

this is where William met the little beasties.....

I got to do a plein air sketch (well, from the car anyways...does that count as plein air I wonder)

St. Catherine's Lighthouse
..we had a pleasant walk down the lane to it  - although not open that day for a closer nose..

of course the inevitable sketch!

in fact I stood on the steps that were like a giant stile.... you may have seen the pic of William on them...

from that vantage point I did this 360 degree video, so you get to see the view too..

Totland Bay
with it's sadly neglected pier

No sand here for William to run and play on, just shingle.  He still had fun in the sea though

Totland Bay beach from anns art on Vimeo.

Totland bay#2 from anns art on Vimeo.

Colwell Bay
and a sketch of Fort Albert

and if you are still here and haven't nodded off (yawn)....Finally,

Cowes
Famous for the yachting week

and yes, I did a quick sketch

I think I'm a Lone Urban Sketcher sometimes!

Hope you enjoyed this
mini tour

Oh I love this post. I could only peruse for now but will come back and click on everything when I have time. but I was so tickled to see Sandown pix. I am looking at a map in my book I mentioned before and there is one photo of people all in old fashioned clothes with umbrellas for sun standing on the Sandown Esplanade listening to a band..is there such a thing there any more? Fun to see these after having read this book over and over. Thanks.. not bored at all reading all this. Oh some great sketches too. and yes sitting in a car is plein air painting in my book..:))

Good to know Robin :) I'm never sure how to go about showing the pix, but hope I do it so's it makes sense :)

We didn't spend much time in Sandown, but next visit I'll get more pix Cris. To be going on with here's the link to their Esplanade on Google StreetView, just copy and paste

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ll=50.65553,-1.15006&spn=0.011019,0.033023&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=50.65553,-1.15006&panoid=4UwvRkidiGkjctp3nsY05Q&cbp=12,217.81,,0,1.11

...(it should work)

Unfortunately I don't know whether they still have a Band, or play during the Summer there. Having said that, where we live there is a Bandstand and summer entertainment opposite the Gallery I exhibit in....so this year I'll get pix of it and some videos to show on here.

I have always loved your drawings and I hope that with computers and digital cameras etc., that it doesn't become a lost art.

But I follow a blog of someone who lives on the Isle of Wight, and through her and posts like yours I am so taken by it--It's another place I've found myself reading about and would love to visit in person one day. Thanks for taking me along until I can do that! :-)

Nice to see William playing in the sea, shame the beach was so pebbly a bit like ours. You've done some excellent sketches and they'll add to your good holiday memories. Shame about the first hotel though!

ann @ studiohyde said...

There will always be plenty of drawings here Kim. Nice that you enjoyed this post and already know about the IOW. We intend going back again before long.

Glad you enjoyed this Christine :)

I love your travel stories, Ann! I have great memories of the Isle of Wight from years ago. I had a sailing friend and had the privilege of experiencing Cowes Week. Beautiful views, and I am glad you had a better and warmer hotel. Thanks for the tour!

Thanks Eileen :)

I enjoyed my visit here today, William's mum. (Ann?) I especially liked Fort Albert and the painting of the sailboat. I looked at both your other blogs too. What fun! Your sketches of William have so much personality and character. I've never been to your Isle of Wight but we here in Virginia also have an Isle of Wight. See: http://www.co.isle-of-wight.va.us/blog/about-isle-of-wight-county/

ann @ studiohyde said...

That's incredible Faye, I've just taken a look at your link. I didn't know you had an IOW over there. I guess it might have been people from this one who went over to the US, in fact I think your US site indicates that. Thanks so much for letting me know.

This looks like a fun place to sketch with so many different views. Nice photos and sketches...and yes, painting in the car counts as plein air (at least it does for me, lol) Thanks for sharing your trip.

Came back to check out all the links and checked the videos.. I forgot check to before. I noticed Shanklin.. which is also in the book I have. The group of friends would head off there for dances or something. Fun to go check out where everything is. :)where did you dock on the Island?

ann @ studiohyde said...

Glad you checked out the videos and places Cris. We enjoyed Shanklin, one evening going for a lovely meal along the seafront...and yes we took William with us. There were two other couples with their dogs too, and the dogs were all friends by the time we left. We arrived at East Cowes from Southampton (well known for it's port of course!). Other time we went over from Lymington and they dock at Yarmouth. Boats also go from Portsmouth to Ryde.
