Rotring Artpen and Paint Party Friday

I do have some favourite ink pens....I expect you do too.   Although I have mentioned this in a previous post (some time ago)  I thought I would just bring this subject up again...if for no reason other than out of interest...

My Favourite pens:

1.  Uniball Eye - Waterproof and Fade proof - I use the Fine version

Really good for sketching and when the ink is dry it doesn't go anywhere.
This is ideal when part of a sketch needs to stay put.

***

2.  Pilot Drawing Pen - Again the Ink is waterproof....ideal.  Nice to draw with, it is what it says
        Drawing Pen.

***

3, Lamy Safari - Nice and chunky to hold

Not waterproof ink, so very useful when needed.
I love how this pen works, so smooth to write and draw with.

***

3.   Pilot V5 Hi-Techpoint  - I use the 0.5 version which comes in useful for thicker lines in sketching

Again, this one isn't waterproof, and works well
for spreading the ink across a sketch

and finally

4.  Rotring Artpen -  I have two of these - One containing Black cartridges the other with Brown     Ink....

Again not waterproof ink, but very nice to hold and use......

As I said, I have two of these.  The Brown, however, does not come out Brown...I think it looks far more Red than brown!    Okay, not a problem if that's what you want, but Rotring changed this colour a few years ago....it used to be true Brown.  Why on earth they had to make it Red I don't know...and yet they still call it Brown!    Misleading I think.

I still use it though...

See what I mean.  These photos have come out pretty true to the actual colour
and these chickens still look red to me not brown!

Has anyone else out there found the same issue with the Rotring 'Brown' ?

It is always fun to see what other people are using for their art. Yes, that ink looks red to me, not brown...but good for the chickens.

Thanks so much for this post. I'm constantly looking for the 'perfect' drawing pen. This is very helpful. I love your chickens! On my screen, they look brown, but more of a reddish brown. I've never used a Rotring pen.

thanks for sharing about the pens-I do love the uniball pens but I'm not familiar with all of these. Great chicken sketch-even tho it does in fact look red :) Happy PPF!

I see that we use some of the same pens.

Right now, I'm using Micron pens a lot.

I bought a Lamy...I do like the "feel" of it, but not waterproof ink. I'm thinking of buying some empty cartridges and filling with waterproof ink. That sounds like a mess waiting to happen though...

Love your chickens, your style is just marvelous Those loose shadows are great!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Zue :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

...Thanks Linda, see, I thought it looked Red too. I've emailed Rotring to ask if they will be doing a BROWN !

ann @ studiohyde said...

It would definitely be a mess if I did it! lol.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks a lot Anne :)

Thanks for the rundown on the pens. I often wonder what other people use and why! The Rotring brown does look more red than brown, but it also has a sepia or burnt sienna quality to it... maybe that is what they are going for. But I would find that frustrating too. However, I love your chickens! I admire your style: communicating so much with few lines and effective shadows.

Thanks for sharing your expert knowledge of pens! Nice sketch!

Lovely chicks, such fluid sketches. Don't know about the brown but it does have a read cast from my view. Happy PPF. xox

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks minnemie - Christine and Corrine

From the comments I can see that it isn't just ME who sees this so called Brown as actually being RED...in my opinion if Rotring are going to stick with this colour, they should name it accordingly :)

Love your sketches, a fabulous style! HPPF!

Oh wow.. Thanks for the shout out. :) Chickens are rather catching aren't they? :) Also thanks for the info on the pens. I have been using pitt pens. I think I might start trying some other ones. Which one do you use for your William drawings? and yes that is definitely RED, not brown or even a burnt sienna when washed with water, but it does work for the chickens comb nicely. I have also heard of the Lamy safari what do you use it for? Great post.

Cris, Oregon Artist said...

oh and great Chicken sketch too!

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Kim :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Cris...I thought the shout out would be a nice surprise for you.
For drawing William, I sometimes combine two pens. If I want ink to stay put and not move, I use the Pilot Drawing Pen. But most times, as I want the ink to basically colour in William's body, I tend to use the Pilot V5 Hi Techpoint - I find the colour of the ink looks just about right. Even though I've mentioned a few pens, I have more...oh yes, I'm a pen collector (◑‿◐)

Ann, I like the new look of your blog, especially the font!
I am not familiar with any of these pens, so I will go shopping for them upon your great advice! Then maybe I too will be able to turn out some "Cris" Chickens as delightfully as you have done here!

I use Prisimcolor pens of late. All sizes.

I just looked down and realized I'd made notes with a Uniball vision. I think it's my husbands. ;-)

Beautiful, pleasant color red chickens!

I'm not an artist, but i love to write, and have quite a collection of wonderful pens. :) I still write letters in cursive instead of e-mail. and keep a couple of journals. Writing is so much more fun than typing.

WoW! I love the sketches...and thanks for the pen "tour."

robin cox walsh said...

Definitely red not brown. Love your 'chicks'! :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Lynn, glad you like the new look of the blog. I've a wide screen on the computer so a lot of background shows up, not sure what it looks like on other screens such as a laptop though. With the Uniball pens I found they glide well across the paper, what say you?

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Faye...I'm glad you agree that the chickens are red :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Mary, Nice that you like to actually write, it's that feeling of holding the pen isn't it :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Glad you enjoyed this post Giggles, Thanks for stopping by :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks so much Elizabeth :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Robin, nice that everyone sees Red too, lol :)

Nice of you to share your experiences with us. I like drawing with a pen, but I have not used it recently. No matter for color, I find that your sketches are adorable.

Ann Buckner said...

Thanks for sharing the info about the pens and love the sketches.

Deanna said...

I have to agree, it is definitely more to the red side than brown but I absolutely love your little sketches! My favorite pens are the Staedtler permanent and a good ole Sharpie pen with the fine tip. Even though the Sharpie is permanent, it will run a little when I use watery watercolor washes but usually the paint covers it up.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Thanks Kaja, glad you enjoyed this post :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Ann, Thanks so much :)

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Deanna, so glad you agree about the red....why Rotring have changed this I'll never know, the original Brown was so good.

simply beautiful!

Abela said...

Certainly it is more red than brown, but the truth is that the result is very nice, its poles look very natural. Saludos

thank you for sharing the gen on the pens, most useful. I use Staedtler pens which are also waterproof, but as yet have not found a brown one. I love how your chickens turned out. Happy PPF, Annette x

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Alicia, yes I like micron pens too. I tend to have fads of favourites and use particular ones a lot, then I find something new and move on to that, I just love pens, lol.

ann @ studiohyde said...

Hi Netty, yes the Staedtler are good too aren't they.

Unknown said...

Definitely red!! That happened with a brown paint I use. Apparently it used to be darker, so I have to watch the advice in any old painting books I pick up. I like the micron pens, but I think I might give the uniball a try. Those old style nibs and my lefthandedness tend not to agree on much!! Thanks for sharing, I love seeing what supplies people use!!

I love the way your chickens emerge from the paper - beautiful, spontaneous work.

Love this post Ann. I used to sell all these pens back in the 1980's while I was a manager of an art and drafting supply store. It was a pleasure to see these again and your comments.

Thanks!
