Watercolour WIP

I started this as a Work in Progress, but only added it to Facebook.  Incidentally although I have the Sketching William fb page, I also have one for my sketches/paintings called Ann The Sketcher - it's my way of keeping the William sketches completely separate.

Anyhoos, back to the point of this post.  The work in progress started like this -

again, using the Saunders Waterford spiral pad.  As you see I splashed on lots of colours here and there.  A little kitchen roll at the top took out the clouds.  All added on pre-wet paper, so lots of fun dropping the colours in.

When this totally and completely dried I added some detail and the final sketch ends up like this:

'Resting by the estuary'

This sketchbook is proving very useful,
I'm using this technique to
experiment in readiness for
future paintings to be framed.

Fascinating to see how blobs of color become an actual painting. Is this a plein air or are you working from a photograph? your imagination?

I know...it was fun to add the blobs of colour. That with the clear water I had already put on the paper, it sort of painted by itself. I did a couple of quick sketches whilst we were out on our walk and also took photos, then worked on the painting at home :-)

Fantastic use of your sketchbook. I carry one with me but these days, don't do much with it any more. This is great inspiration. I love your wet in wet technique. Fabulous.

Ann, this came out really lovely! I like the fuzzy look to the background and the foreground detail. Nice work on that boat!!

Thanks Joan. I like the background too, I think it focuses the eye on the detail of the boat. This sketchbook of drawings is proving very useful for practice and ideas which I can work from for more formal paintings in the future...so glad I rediscovered this sketchbook after ages of it sitting in my art room.

That looks so easy but I know from previous attempts that mine never turn out anywhere as good as yours! Sarah x

Thanks Sarah, but really it is just practice. Perhaps I should do a little video of a similar scene to show how easy it can be.

Wonderful paintings, Ann. I really need to take some lessons so I can get better.

Thanks Faye. I would encourage you to join lessons, I take the occasional Workshop and they help tremendously.
