Travelling along the Rhine in Germany

....sorry to repeat myself {{blush}}  I have added this post to Paper, Paint, Pencils and Pens, but felt it would be nice to add it here too.

We went on a River cruise along the Rhine some years ago in Germany.  There had been extensive flooding in the area, which you would think would be fine, it was a river cruise after all.  Sadly not a good thing as it turned out!!  Because the river had risen, towns along the river were at greater risk from the swell of boats travelling along it, hence our cruise boat couldn't travel from its dock in Cologne.  So instead of travelling horizontally we actually travelled vertically on the Rhine, the river was still rising when we were there.   That could only happen to us and the number of times I have told this I could not count {{laugh}}

We always see the cup half full, it's a wonderful way to travel through life. We benefited from this
event in that the Tour company arranged for a coach to take us along the route of the Rhine and stop at wonderful towns and villages along the way.  We gained, as ever, from the unfortunate weather.

Because it was such a lovely holiday, this is a place I would love to go back to.  Either by cruise boat or just independent travel along the Rhine and take in the wonderful scenery again.  (can you imagine the fun I would have sketching ahhhhh).

Aww, so sorry your cruise holiday fell through (in Dutch we say: 'fell into the water' :) ). It is a wonderful area, paradise for a sketcher, I think. Love the sketch! Thanks for sharing the story!

I love that you found the silver lining in the bad news that your cruise couldn't take place in full as you'd planned - and you may well have seen more by virtue of the substituted bus trip anyway! I love Germany - every place I've visited there has been beautiful and clean and so well organised - definitely one of my favourite countries. Your pen and wash sketch is gorgeous.

Thanks so much Erika ☺

Yes, we always look on the bright side Judy, our cup is always half full, or in this case overflowing (as the Rhine was) ☺

Somehow things always work out for the better for us and this trip didn't disappoint. I thought Germany was very clean too, we will go back I'm sure.

Your sketch is so nice! And it's a good practice also, that glass half full outlook! Happy PPF

Beautiful sketch, Ann. My dh and I made that Rhine trip on the first trip we made to Europe in 1972. No flooding then.

It is a lovely way to travel, well, providing the boat moves in the right direction, lol ...we enjoyed ourselves anyway.

Oh, what a landscape! I went hitch-hiking from Finland to Hungary years and years ago and traveled along the Rhine, it was so beautiful.

In every bit of bad news there's always some good news hiding.I'd love to do a cruise like that, many of my friends here in Canada have enjoyed that area. Maybe one day. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to June when I'm off to Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Czech Rep. and England. And taking my sketchbook!

That sounds like a wonderful trip with a lot of countries to enjoy, I'm quite envious.

What a shame you didn't get a chance to go along the Rhine on your cruise. What company did you go with? My parents took me along the Rhine in a car when i was a child. Your picture brings back happy memories!

Husband and myself on this trip, but we were glad to have been there. Looking back it was quite funny that we didn't travel 'along' the Rhine but 'upwards on it'. I think we saw places that otherwise we would have missed too, so that was a bonus. Glad my picture reminded you of happy memories in your own life for you.

Beautiful! I've never been on a cruise but I've been told by many that it's a great way to see the world.

We've been on both an ocean cruise and a river cruise (well, the river cruise of sorts, lol), and have to say we enjoy both. They are a great way to travel.
