Wall mending

Work has been ongoing at Arlington Court during the Winter months, even when the house and carriage museum are closed.  Volunteers and Rangers have been busy mending and repairing a wall on the Estate, it's just beyond the Monkey Puzzle walk...

We happened along whilst they were taking a break, so I got to take some close up pictures of the work...

Very beautiful wall! What is the hole for?

That must be a real skill mending the wall and a fantastic amount of work in building it in the first place. It really is a work of art.

Very nice, what a great way to preserve the wall. Lots of slate around to use!

Funny name for a tree isn't it. Apparently when it first was introduced into the UK, it was said that it would puzzle a monkey to climb it...and the name monkey puzzle stuck.

You're right, it is beautiful. Not sure why the hole is so large, but it could have been like that originally, a decorative feature, or to let water through.

I think it has taken a team of volunteers and rangers some time to get this sorted out. First they had to demolish the wonky parts, then rebuild. Such a smart job. If you look at the last photo, that's a well established wall, been there years. Hopefully the repaired one will last a long time too.

I like the colours in it :)

Knowing the Trust, they will have used the things on hand. I must remember to ask if they cleaned up the demolished pieces and replaced them. But yes, there is a lot of slate around, and don't we know it! lol.

Yeah, it's definitely a skill.

That is a very cool wall. Those stone workers are amazing especially the hobbit hole entrance.

It did look impressive, I must admit.

It takes a lot of hours work, and so worth it 🙂
