Sktchy step-by-step

Thought you may be interested in seeing how I go about those Sktchy drawings.

Selected my image:

(image from the Sktchy app on iPhone/ipads
Dwayne Rose)

Firstly I draw a rough outline of a face, this is basically an egg shape
(using a basic cheap graphite pencil to start with)

I think about the angle of the head, so for this I angled it to the left.

Then I Shape the chin for the individual - basically faces are either
heart shaped, square or round
🖤 ⬛️ ⚫️

Next I marked where the mouth would go > bottom of the nose > then the eyes

You can see that the features (eyes, nose, mouth) only take up the bottom
Half of the head shape

***

Starting with the mouth I put in the lips,
nostrils
and that gave me a line up to the left eye (as we view this),
that in turn enabled me to place the right eye

***

Having placed the features of the face,
I then added the hair.
You'll see I put a straight line down on the left hand side,
(take a look at the reference photo, only part of the head is visible)

***
Happy with this so far
I continued with my Lyra 9B water soluble graphite pencil
and added the darkest areas around the hair > shadows on face >
clothes

***

Almost finished.

All I needed to do was add some clear water to this graphite
and the drawing is done.

Although I erase some of the pencil marks,
I tend to keep a lot of the additional lines
as I think it adds character to the portrait.

You make it look and sound so easy, Ann. You would be a good teacher though you'd have a real challenge with me.

Thanks CJ 🙂

Well, I wouldn't say I have mastered Portraiture, I've simply found a way that works for me 😆

I would enjoy teaching, although in the back of my mind I'm sure I have heard of a reason why people teach and don't do, lol. 😆😆. Seriously though, I know that if people have the 'desire to paint' they can be taught it. 🙂🎨

Interesting to see how someone else goes about it. You make them recognizable! Mine, not so much....LOL ;)

I seem to have found a way that gets me to a drawing I'm happy with. Amazing as I was never into portraits before.

Thank you Ann for sharing how you do a portrait. This turned out wonderful. It is always a learning curve when drawing a face. Hope you have a lovely day. Hugs!

Thanks Debbie, a turning point for me was having the lyra watersoluable graphite, soooo brilliant to use.

Thanks Judy, like I said to Debbie in the comment above, the Lyra is so good. i'm now awaiting two more from the art supplier, so I can use different tones and not just the one I currently have.

Glad you liked seeing the step by step to these Joan. I've surprised myself with portraits, never taken to that kind of art before and suddenly Whoosh! I'm enjoying it, lol.
