Second day of the Art course

DAY 2 - LYMPSTONE HARBOUR

Another sunny day, so we met our tutor *Ray Balkwill at the Harbour in Lympstone.

Setting up his easel for a demo - first choosing the scene to paint
This view was chosen, although there were lots of options.  In the end you have to make a decision and stick with it.

Ray decided to include Darling Rock (I found a blogpost by Wayland Wordsmith with some info about it, so click here if you would like to read)

A mixed media painting :
Watercolour
Ink
Pastel

Perfect

Then it was time for us to find our own scene to paint.
Being such a hot day, I decided to walk around the point to the shaded side

and chose this view looking across the estuary

Starting with Thumbnail sketches to decide on my subject

This painting needs more work, but this is where it stood at the end of our day en plein air painting

As you see, it was a gorgeous place for painting and everyone enjoyed the day.

This course was worth every second Marie. Everything worked, the art, the weather and the locations :)

Oh my goodness, this sounds like a wonderful opportunity to learn from the artist. I love his painting, and yours too. I've never tried plein aire painting, will have to have a go one day, but I usually paint in acrylics and they dry really fast, may have to try watercolour.

It was really good, seeing Ray painting plus doing the outdoor painting myself. Never done en plein air to that extent, sketches yes, but not actual full blown painting there in the scene....found I loved it, what a win win.

In fact you using acrylics is probably a good thing for painting outdoors, with them drying fast, that would be a bonus...make sure you have plenty of water to use and keep the paint wet, but you can get an extending medium to make them stay wetter longer. Start with a small canvas, and get used to it first.

I like seeing the photos of the demo as well as your thumbnails for your final painting. This is really nice!

Thanks Joan, the thumbnails and doing tonal notes is really useful.
