Thanks to my dear Grandad. I wasn't on roads, only on an old airfield, that back in the day was left after the airfield was closed after WWII. Grandad taught me to drive his old Austin van, at first in one gear creaking along, lol...then I changed gear and turned to go back the way I had 'driven' (if you can call it driving then) and I remember Grandad's astonishment that I had changed gear. Personally it seemed completely normal, after all I spent a lot of time watching him drive and also my dad. When I got to 17 with a Provisional license I went out on the Forest roads, which were narrow with ditches, certainly on the nearside and the occasional car passing. Now that was scary!! lol
Yes, ten. It seems incredible now, but was completely normal back in the day, lol. I learnt to do hand signals too, before I got on proper roads....well, to be honest I had to, Grandad's old van had indicators known as 'trafficators' that sort of flipped out from within the side panels of the van...trouble was, the one on the drivers side would flip back IN, but getting it to pop up was another story. I got quite adapt at turning the switch on the dashboard for it, and then literally Hitting the side of the van just behind me to get it to pop up....good old days aye 😆

What a great place to learn to drive! How old were you when you got your Driver's License?
I love how nature takes back everything. It looks serene.
I remember walking at Stoney Cross! Former RAF airfield.
When you were TEN????? What kind of driving laws do they have over there??????? ;)
Took my test when I was 18 😊
Yes, horses, donkeys and cattle roam there.
That's it. Our family used to picnic there and tried kite flying, which failed miserably, lol.
Ha, it was off road so was ok. I have my grandad to thank for teaching me at such a young age.
You are full of surprises Ann, driving aged ten, wow !
Ten? :) Will be a great painting!
