My objective is:
to teach a small class of people with Beginner/Intermediate skills
demo a painting they can follow easily, but still has detail to it
give some painting tips on techniques along the way
and in the end, hope they end up with a painting they can feel proud of themselves for doing
first idea
I think an estuary view covers several aspects in technique.
1. Sky - adding different washes
2. Sea/Water/Estuary - some people find
difficulty with water
3. Putting in a focal point (in this case it's the House)
4. Adding some Movement/Life : this comes with the boat - in peoples mind viewing this, they know there will have been somebody real there at some point and a boat moves, so hence movement
5. The foreground grasses - some are at an angle which indicates breeze and movement
As I mentioned, this is just the first version of this scene.

This will be a wonderful art class!
A great idea Ann, I'm sure you'll be a brilliant teacher.
You nailed it! Lucky students! :)
Thanks so much Christine, Eileen and Robin.....I'm still working on other versions, just to make sure I teach the best angle of this view. Colours come into it too, I'm trying different combinations for the sky. I'll add another post when I have them ready :)
Promising start, it looks great already!
Thanks Judy. I have a second version, I'll blogpost that later.
I love the scene just as it is!
Thanks Marie, it's nice to know how others see it :)
Are your demos always with watercolours? I have only used watercolours by doing a pen and ink drawing and then using a wash to add colour, never done one just watercolour alone. Maybe you can give me a private lesson when (if!) I'm in N Devon next summer... we are thinking about a trip but need to do lots of planning. I'm usually using acrylics. Just done a workshop on negative painting, and I will be posting pics of our results later this week.
Hi Shammickite, Yes, my demos have been watercolours so far. It would be great if you came over next summer and I would definitely do a watercolour lesson for you, great idea. It's a must do on your list, now make sure you put it on your itinerary :)
