Cat on a windowsill....

At the Work in Progress stage

This painting measures 8" x 8"
and I've used mostly palette knife for it.

Tricky and fiddly with a palette knife on a small piece,
but have been persevering.

Not finished as you see, but almost there....

Nice, I like it so far. Do you use a selection of different sizes of palette knives? I just have one, it's hard to do small stuff with it, and I think I should get a smaller and a larger.

Always impressed at how you manage to make such wonderful paintings in miniature.

Shammickite, I have a selection of various sized palette knives, although mainly only use one. The blade part is about 3" long, near the handle about ¼" wide and narrowing to the tip with a rounded end. It's my 'to go' palette knife but I do use others every so often just to do little odds and ends. When necessary I resort to a brush :)

Robin....getting back into oils again, I'm really enjoying it. There's two techniques I like: One is called 'fat over lean' where you add thin layers over each other and end up with quite a smooth finish. The other is with the palette knife, with lots of thick paint. Ohhhh, the decisions when I Love both ways!

Thanks Eileen.....there was a time when I couldn't have managed tiny paintings, I think it really does come down to practise :)

Christine.....many thanks, I'll add the completed painting later today :)
